When the pump drive faults

Lift-station drive down at 2 a.m.? The pump still has to run. When the drive fails, the pump keeps running. One turn of the VFD / OFF / BYPASS selector puts it across the line. In this free live webinar, presented by Think-PLC, we walk the G210X Pump & Fan Drive Package from the fault into bypass, step by step, the way your operators will do it, and show why the pump stops for about 2 minutes when you switch back to VFD.

From fault to bypass and back

The hour turns on three moments at the enclosure. This is what you will see live, on the one-line.

One-line of the G210X 3-contactor bypass: drive faulted, selector at VFD, pump stopped, level rising
01 · The drive faults

The drive trips. The pump stops. The level keeps rising.

We start where your operator starts: an alarm, a stopped pump and a level that keeps climbing. We show what they see at the window, and the move they make next.

One-line of the G210X 3-contactor bypass: selector at BYPASS, bypass contactor closed, pump running across the line, 24 V on
02 · One turn to bypass

One turn of the selector puts the pump across the line.

Your operator turns the VFD / OFF / BYPASS selector to BYPASS. The motor coasts for a few seconds, then starts across the line, and your level controls can still start and stop it through the bypass remote-run input. In bypass the motor runs across the line at full speed, with no speed control and none of the drive's pump functions. In bypass the motor is protected by the manual-reset overload.

In bypass, still on the network. A 24 V supply keeps the drive's control unit and PROFINET powered with the drive input contactor open, so the drive keeps reporting its own status.

One-line of the G210X 3-contactor bypass: selector back at VFD, drive path closed, 120 s timer, pump stopped for about 2 minutes
03 · Back to VFD

The pump stops for about 2 minutes when you switch back to VFD.

Back to VFD: the pump stops when the selector leaves BYPASS, and the drive can't restart it for 120 s (the engraved plate says so). Plan the switch-back for a time when the pump can be off for about 2 minutes. The drive then starts it again, with de-ragging, pipe filling and dry-run protection set up for your station. They work in drive mode.

Who it is for

  • Operators and maintenance

What to do at the window when the drive faults, what keeps running in bypass, what to lock out before anyone opens the door, and when to go back to VFD, since the pump stops for about 2 minutes when you switch back.

    Operators first
  • Distributor sales and application engineers

How to explain the bypass in a minute, which loads it is for (centrifugal pumps and fans), and the short list to collect so the quote comes back right. At the end: why and how to become a G210X distributor.

  • Engineers and integrators

The 3-contactor bypass: drive input, drive output and bypass contactors, with the output and bypass contactors interlocked mechanically and electrically so the drive is never back-fed. Plus the remote-run input, the dry contacts, and PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP on the drive.

The hour, as planned

  • 01

The 2 a.m. call. The drive has faulted, the pump has stopped and the level keeps rising. What your operator sees first.

  • 02

One turn to BYPASS. The VFD / OFF / BYPASS selector behind the window, the few seconds of coast-down, and the pump running across the line at full speed. Your level controls can still start and stop it through the bypass remote-run input.

  • 03

In bypass, still on the network. The 24 V supply keeps the drive's control unit and PROFINET powered, and bypass status comes out on dry contacts. In bypass the network keeps reporting the drive's own status, not whether the motor is running in bypass.

  • 04

While the drive waits for service. The bypass keeps the motor running while the drive is faulted or waiting for service. Replacing the drive means turning off and locking out the breaker, which stops the motor. Turn off and lock out the disconnect before opening the door. The drive's capacitors stay charged for up to 5 minutes after power off.

  • 05

Back to VFD. Why the pump stops for about 2 minutes when you switch back to VFD, and how to plan for it.

  • 06

Back in drive mode. De-ragging, pipe filling and dry-run protection, set up for your station. They work in drive mode.

For distributors · The last part of the hour

Want to be a G210X distributor?

We close the hour with this, live. If your branch sells to people who run pumps and fans, here is why the G210X package is worth carrying, and how to ask.

Here is why

  • A ready-made package

A pre-engineered enclosed drive package for 480 V pumps and fans, built around the Siemens SINAMICS G210X. Every combination is a standard part number.

  • No stock required

Think-PLC drop-ships from North Carolina, FOB origin, freight prepaid and added. No stock required. Lead time is confirmed at quote.

  • Backed by the team that built it

Startup and field service from Think-PLC, the team that built it. 3-year warranty with Think-PLC startup.

  • Help in front of your customer

Bring us in for a free drive survey or a lunch-and-learn with your customer, where available. On a survey we walk the pumps and fans with their maintenance team, read the nameplates and say which drives are candidates for the package.

  • Quotes in 1 business day

Quotes in 1 business day for standard configurations, 3 business days when quote-only options are involved.

  • Register first, protected 90 days

90 days of deal protection when you register the deal first (house accounts excepted). Registering a deal does not guarantee an order; full terms are in the reseller agreement.
